Types of Appliances

elastics (rubber bands)

Elastics (Rubber Bands)

Elastics, or rubber bands, are used to improve the alignment of your upper and lower teeth by positioning the lower jaw for optimal function. It's crucial to wear them as instructed, as using them incorrectly can lead to undesired results. Additionally, wearing them for the recommended duration of hours each day ensures they work effectively. Consistency is key for the best outcomes.

palatal expander

Palatal Expander (RPE)

Palatal expanders, or Rapid Palatal Expanders (RPE), are often used to widen a narrow upper jaw, correct crossbites, and alleviate crowding. This device is designed to widen the upper jaw by applying gentle pressure on the upper molars during adjustments. The orthodontist will provide guidance on when and how to make these adjustments. Once the desired expansion is achieved, the appliance will stay cemented for several months to stabilize the changes and prevent regression. This treatment helps create more space for teeth and improves bite alignment.

forsus

Forsus & Herbst Appliances

The Forsus and Herbst appliances are effective alternatives to headgear for addressing excessive overjet (the pronounced protrusion of the upper jaw past the lower jaw). A key advantage of these systems is that their effectiveness does not depend on patient cooperation. Cemented in place, these devices provide continuous guidance for the lower jaw to achieve its proper position, helping to reduce overjet and improve overall jaw alignment. By promoting healthy jaw development, these appliances enhance the fit of the teeth and jaws, potentially reducing the need for more invasive procedures, such as jaw surgery.

Mara

MARA Appliance

The Mandibular Anterior Repositioning Appliance (MARA) is an effective option for treating Class II malocclusions. In a healthy bite (Class I), the upper and lower teeth mesh smoothly, much like well-aligned gears. However, in Class II malocclusions, the upper teeth are positioned too far forward, hindering proper alignment.

The MARA features arms and elbows that guide the jaw into the correct biting position, similar to the Forsus device but designed for less severe bite discrepancies. This appliance helps improve jaw relationships and overall dental function.

headgear

Protraction Headgear

Protraction Headgear, also known as Reverse Pull Headgear, is designed for patients with underbites caused by insufficient upper jaw growth. In this condition, the lower jaw extends too far forward compared to the upper jaw. This headgear gently pulls the upper jaw forward using rubber bands while stabilizing the lower jaw, promoting balanced growth and alignment between the two.

Cervical Headgear

Cervical Headgear is used for patients with overjet or excessive upper jaw growth. It addresses situations where the upper jaw protrudes too far forward in relation to the lower jaw. This headgear applies gentle pressure from the back of the neck, helping to control the growth of the upper jaw while allowing the lower jaw to grow normally. By guiding the alignment of the jaws, it fosters a more balanced bite and improved facial aesthetics.

retainers

Retainers

Retainers may be removable or fixed. They hold your teeth in their new, correct positions after your teeth have been straightened. Your orthodontist will instruct you on how to care for your retainer and about the duration of the wear. Wearing your retainer as directed is crucial to prevent regression of your treatment.

separator

Separators or Spacers

Separators are small rubber doughnuts placed between your teeth to create space for comfortable placement of orthodontic bands during your next appointment. They will be removed before the bands are applied. While separators are in place, be sure to avoid sticky foods, toothpicks, and flossing in the separated areas. They are commonly used prior to the placement of appliances such as Forsus, Herbst, RPE, and Mara.
